Girl With Green Hair - 1966

FD-29 poster Girl with Green Hair by Mouse and Kelley 1966 Big Brother and Jim Kweskin poster

Description

Another classic image from Mouse and Kelley, the central image of this poster is the JOB rolling paper poster created in 1897 by the well known Art Nouveau artist, Alphonse Mucha (1860-1939). Mouse and Kelly “borrowed” this image and proceeded to change the colors completely, giving it the proper psychedelic effect. Speaking of psychedelics, these shows happened the day after LSD was made illegal in California on October 6, 1966. Not that this stopped anyone…

This poster from 1966 came out the same month that Wes Wilson’s “The Sound” poster was produced for the Fillmore series and so Wilson, Mouse, and Kelley were now really hitting their stride, artistically. The bottom of the poster features a “ticketstrip,” or a list of local retailers – typically record stores or head shops – that sold tickets to these shows. There was no Ticketron, Ticketmaster, StubHub…tickets were all hand printed and sold direct, farm to table.

Jim Kweskin Jug Band featured lead vocalist Maria Muldaur who had a huge hit in 1973 with “Midnight at the Oasis.” Muldaur also opened for the Grateful Dead at shows with Jerry Garcia Band bassist John Kahn. Muldaur had long wavy brown hair – was she the inspiration for Mouse and Kelley using this image?
