Janis Joplin, Big Brother; Ball and Chain, Monterey Pop 1967

Janis Joplin rules at Monterey. So, because of the animosity between SF and LA-based bands - and the fact that this festival was organized by LA-based John Phillips and Lou Adler of the Mama and Papas - Big Brother and Janis refused to be filmed at Monterey. But after they played the first night, the response was so strong that their manager realized this could break them and so they were hastily shoe-horned into a slot on Sunday where they could be filmed. Here is the result. The reaction of Mama Cass Elliot, mouth agape, in the crowd says it all.
