Horatio Potblower God Save The Seeds

1969 poster Horatio Potblower God Save The Seeds

Description

Here we have a classic 1969 “head shop” poster featuring Horatio Potblower. The reference is to Horatio Hornblower, a fictional officer in the British Royal Navy during the Napoleonic Wars, and the protagonist of a series of novels and stories by C. S. Forester first published in 1937. After surviving many adventures Hornblower rises to become Admiral of the Fleet. Interestingly, the fictional Hornblower was tone deaf.

Hornblower’s stoned doppelganger, Admiral Potblower, is urging God to save the seeds instead of the Queen. And he declares, "It Ain't A Free Country, If A Man Can't Blow What He Pleases." The poster was made by “Sheep” and the company Stone Kingdom Syndicate and published by Graphoto in San Francisco, one of hundreds of printers around the country meeting the demand for posters during this time.
