Bahr Gallery Update December 31, 2018

The Bahr Gallery opened its doors in April 2018 with a weekend of opening receptions attended by more than 140 well-wishing and curious attendees. We hosted a number of visitors during Oyster Bay’s Classic Car nights on summer Tuesdays and then hosted our first specific Exhibition, featuring the art rock posters of the Grateful Dead, in the Fall.

People gathered at The Bahr for musical events highlighted by David Gans and Stephen Inglis in November as well as private Gallery tours, receptions and surprise parties – 14 in all. Most gratifying was the evidence that we were providing a place for bringing back people’s memories and feelings from long ago with the art and music as conduits.

More than 500 people liked what we were doing enough to join the mailing list and we look forward to seeing each one of you again next year. 36 pieces of fantastic vintage psychedelic art walked out of the Gallery and are now hanging on new walls peering out from behind their museum glass and smiling at their new owners. Bahr Gallery pieces are hanging from Palm Springs and Hillsborough CA to Boulder to South Carolina, Maryland, Saratoga Springs, the Upper West Side, the Hamptons and across Long Island. The Pigpen Alton Kelley Joint Show collage so many people liked is in a house waiting to be carried to Europe where it will hang in the Redwood Bar in Berlin.

 Plans for 2019

Here are some of our plans for 2019 so far. We will be open by appointment Jan 1-Feb 7. Over the February 8th weekend we will reopen with our Winter Showcase, with an assortment of more than 30 new beautiful and historically significant posters. In the Spring we will enjoy our shores being breached by a British Invasion featuring pieces by late 1960s and early 70’s UK artists like the Yardbirds, Rolling Stones, the Who, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Cream, and oh yes, the Beatles. In the summer we will host Woodstock and other Festivals, and featuring Jimi Hendrix and in the Fall we will have a new Grateful Dead Exhibition – let’s just make that an annual event shall we?

Musically we have a number of appearances in the works. David Gans had a great time at The Bahr (so did we) and he will be back in the Fall. Other events are in the works as well as a book signing or two and something we can all participate in called “Voices of Woodstock,” later this summer. If you want to know what’s happening please drop me a line and get on the e-mail list:  ted@bahrgallery.com

The late 1960s were a time of incredible change, turmoil, experimentation, music and art. We are privileged to be able to share some of this Utopian ideal with you represented by the poster art of the times, a brief period when it seemed, at least at times, that peace and love would win the day.
